International Fuel Tax Agreement
(IFTA)
The International Fuel tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement among jurisdictions in Canada and the United States that simplifies the reporting of motor fuel tax by interjurisdictional carriers with a gross weight in excess of 11,793 kg or 26,000 lbs.
IFTA enables participating jurisdictions to act cooperatively and provide mutual assistance in the administration and collection of motor fuel use taxes.
The purpose of this agreement is to establish and maintain the concept of one fuel use license and administering base jurisdiction for each licensee and to provide that a licensee’s base jurisdiction will have the primary responsibility administering the International Fuel Tax Agreement and executing all its provisions with respect to such license.
IFTA Tax Return Form 501 must be filed no later than 30 days after the end of each quarter. You are required to file even if there were No Interjurisdictional Operations during a quarter. If you fail to file during 2 consecutive quarterly periods your license may be revoked and a $1,000.00 penalty imposed. The current interest rate applicable to any outstanding tax liability is 7.00% and applicable to any refunds not paid within 90 days is also 7.00%.
We file IFTA returns for over 300 trucking companies and include NY, KY, & NM Road Tax. For more information please email Stateside Consulting Inc. |
